What to pack for a safari

Packing for a safari is mostly about comfort: cool, dusty days, cold early mornings and long stretches in a vehicle. Here is what we suggest to every traveller.

Clothes

  • Neutral colours — khaki, beige, olive. Bright colours and dark blue or black can attract insects.
  • Layers: a fleece or light jacket for 6am game drives, T-shirts for midday.
  • A wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses.
  • Comfortable closed shoes for walking around camp.

Gear

  • Binoculars — one pair per person if you can.
  • A camera with a zoom lens, plus spare batteries and memory cards.
  • A power bank: some camps only charge devices at certain hours.
  • A small daypack for the vehicle.

Health and documents

  • Sunscreen and insect repellent.
  • Any personal medication, in your hand luggage.
  • Passport and visa documents for trips outside Kenya.
  • Travel insurance details.

Soft bags travel better than hard suitcases, especially if your safari includes a light aircraft flight with luggage limits. If you have questions about a specific trip, ask us — we send a packing list with every booking.
