Kipipiri Hill hike, Aberdares
Kipipiri stands on its own just off the Aberdare range, which is why the view from the top goes so far. Expect a long, steep forest climb, cold mist at the summit, and legs that will remember it on Monday.
Most people heading to the Aberdares drive straight to the national park. Kipipiri is the hill they pass on the way, and the ones who stop for it tend to come back. The trail climbs through farmland, then thick montane forest and bamboo, before opening out near the top at around 3,300 metres.
It is not a stroll. The path is steep and can be muddy after rain, and the summit is often wrapped in cloud by midday, which is why we start walking early. On a clear morning you can see across the Aberdare ridge and down towards the Rift Valley.
Pick the day trip if you are happy with a pre-dawn pickup, or take the two-day option and spend a quiet night nearby before the climb.

Questions travellers ask
How fit do I need to be?
Fit enough to walk uphill for three to four hours with short breaks. If you have done Ngong Hills or Longonot comfortably, you will manage Kipipiri — it is just longer and steeper.
What should I wear?
Hiking shoes with good grip, a warm layer and a rain jacket. The summit can be cold and wet even when Nairobi is sunny.
