Mount Longonot crater rim
Up the side of a dormant volcano, then all the way around the rim. You will see steam vents, Lake Naivasha and a forest growing inside the crater. Also, a lot of dust.
Longonot is short and steep. The climb from the gate to the crater rim is about three kilometres, most of it on loose volcanic ash that slides under your feet. Then comes the decision: go home happy, or walk the full rim.
The full loop is roughly seven more kilometres, with one steep section up to the highest point at around 2,780 m. On the far side you look straight down into the forest in the crater, and on clear days across to Lake Naivasha.
Shoes with real grip make a big difference here. So does starting early, before the sun is high.
