Planning your first holiday abroad

A first trip abroad is exciting, and a little preparation removes most of the stress. Use this checklist when you start planning.
Three months or more before you go
- Check your passport is valid for at least six months after your return date, with blank pages.
- Find out whether you need a visa — requirements depend on your nationality and destination, and they change. We confirm this when you book.
- Ask a travel clinic whether you need any vaccinations or a yellow fever certificate.
When you book
- Get travel insurance that covers medical emergencies and cancellation.
- Save copies of your passport, tickets and hotel bookings on your phone and in your email.
- Tell your bank you will be travelling so your card works abroad.
Before you fly
- Carry some local currency or US dollars for small purchases.
- Check baggage allowances for every flight, including connections.
- Share your itinerary with someone at home.
Our international packages include flights on request, transfers and a local contact at your destination, so you are never on your own.
