Lakeside camping at Naivasha

A boat among the hippos, a bike ride past zebras in Hell’s Gate, and a night in a tent beside the lake. Camping for people who have never camped, and for people who always do.

Naivasha is close enough for a weekend and busy enough to fill one. We take a boat out early, when the hippos are still in the shallows and the fish eagles are calling. In the afternoon we hire bikes and ride into Hell’s Gate, one of the few parks in Kenya where you can cycle among the animals.

At the gorge, a local guide leads you down between the red cliffs. It is narrow in places and slippery after rain, so follow their feet. The night is in tents by the lake, with dinner cooked for you.
