Giraffe Centre, Langata
Eye-level with a giraffe, a handful of pellets, and a very long tongue. The Giraffe Centre looks after endangered Rothschild’s giraffes and has been teaching Nairobi’s schoolchildren about them for decades.
You climb a raised platform, someone hands you food, and a giraffe leans its enormous head right over the rail. Some visitors try the ‘kiss’ with a pellet between their lips. Most just laugh.
Behind the fun there is real conservation: the centre was set up to protect a subspecies whose numbers had fallen badly, and it runs education programmes for school groups. Stay for the short talk; it is worth it.
The Sheldrick elephant orphanage is minutes away, so most people do both in one morning.
