Mt Kenya animal orphanage & the mountain bongo
At the gate of the Mount Kenya Wildlife Conservancy, keepers care for injured and orphaned animals and run a breeding programme for the critically endangered mountain bongo. Your visit helps pay for it.
The mountain bongo is one of Africa’s rarest antelopes — big, chestnut-red with white stripes, and almost gone from Kenya’s forests. The Mount Kenya Wildlife Conservancy has been breeding bongos and preparing them for life back in the wild since 2004, and the orphanage is where you can meet some of them up close.
You will also meet the other residents: animals that were injured, orphaned or rescued, looked after with the aim of returning them to the wild where possible. Keepers explain each story as you walk round.
The orphanage is a short walk from Fairmont Mount Kenya Safari Club, so it is an easy add-on to a Fairmont stay or a Nanyuki weekend. Ticket fees go towards the conservation work.
