A short flight from Nairobi and you are getting lost in Stone Town’s alleys, eating at the Forodhani night market, then moving north for turquoise water at Nungwi or Kendwa.
Zanzibar is two holidays in one. Stone Town is a maze of carved doors, rooftop cafés and old merchant houses; a local guide walks you through its history, including the hard parts. A morning on a spice farm explains why the island was once so valuable.
Then you head north, where the tide stays in most of the day and the sunsets draw a crowd. Snorkelling trips and dhow cruises are easy to add.
