Watamu: marine park, turtles & Gede Ruins
A smaller, slower beach town with some of the best snorkelling on the coast, a turtle rescue centre, and the ruins of a Swahili town swallowed by the forest.
Watamu suits people who want the beach without the crowds. The marine park starts almost at the shoreline; take a glass-bottom boat out at low tide and snorkel over coral full of fish.
Inland, the ruins of Gede are what is left of a Swahili town abandoned centuries ago, now shaded by huge trees and patrolled by monkeys. Back in Watamu, the local turtle conservation team rescues and releases sea turtles, and visitors are welcome to learn how. End a day at Mida Creek, where the tide pulls back across the mangroves at sunset.
