Tsavo East & West safari
Kenya’s biggest wilderness: red-dust elephants, the hippos of Mzima Springs, old lava flows and the story of the man-eaters that stopped the railway. Easy to add to a coast holiday.
Tsavo is huge. The two parks together cover more ground than some countries, and that is its charm. You can drive for an hour and see nobody else. The elephants here are coated in red earth from dust-bathing, which makes them look painted.
In Tsavo West, Mzima Springs bubbles up clear from under the lava; watch hippos from the underwater hide. In the east there are the Lugard Falls and wide open plains. Your guide will tell you about the lions that terrorised railway workers here in 1898.
Game densities are lower than in the Mara, but the space and solitude make up for it. It pairs well with a few days on the beach.
