Sagana white water rafting
A day on the Tana River: practice on calm water, then rapids that will get everyone shouting. Two hours from Nairobi and back the same evening.
Nobody expects to be scared on a Saturday morning in Kirinyaga. Then the guide calls ‘forward hard!’ and the first rapid arrives. The Tana at Sagana has grade 3 to 5 sections, depending on the water level, with calmer pools in between to catch your breath (and sometimes swim).
Everyone gets a full safety briefing, a helmet, a life jacket and some practice before the real thing. Each raft has a trained river guide, and a safety kayaker follows the group.
It works for first-timers, teams and birthday groups. We just ask that rafters are at least 12.

Questions travellers ask
I can’t swim. Can I still raft?
Yes. Everyone wears a life jacket and the guides teach you what to do if you fall in. Tell us beforehand and we will put you in a raft with a calmer line.
What should I wear?
Swimwear or quick-drying clothes, and sandals or shoes that strap on. Bring a towel and a full change of clothes.
